What is Section 80C?
Section 80C of the Income Tax Act lets you deduct up to ₹1,50,000 per year from your taxable income for specified investments and expenses. Popular options include EPF and VPF, PPF, ELSS mutual funds, life insurance premiums, children's tuition fees, home loan principal repayment, NSC, tax-saving fixed deposits and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana.
The ₹1.5 lakh limit is a combined ceiling across all these instruments — contributing more than ₹1.5 lakh does not increase your deduction. The tax you save depends on your marginal slab rate: at 30% (plus 4% cess), a full ₹1.5 lakh deduction saves about ₹46,800 in tax.
Section 80C deductions are available only under the old tax regime. If you choose the new regime, these deductions do not apply, so compare both regimes before locking in investments.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum deduction under Section 80C?
The maximum is ₹1,50,000 per financial year, combined across all eligible investments and expenses. Some additional deductions like NPS under 80CCD(1B) (₹50,000) are over and above this limit.
Is Section 80C available in the new tax regime?
No. Section 80C and most other deductions are only available in the old tax regime. The new regime offers lower slab rates but disallows these deductions. Use our income tax calculator to compare.
Does home loan principal qualify under 80C?
Yes. Repayment of the principal portion of a home loan qualifies under Section 80C (within the ₹1.5 lakh limit). The interest portion is separately deductible under Section 24(b), up to ₹2 lakh for a self-occupied property.
Which 80C investment is best?
It depends on your goals and risk appetite. ELSS offers market-linked returns with the shortest lock-in (3 years); PPF and EPF are safe and tax-free; insurance provides cover. EvoTax can help you plan the right mix.
How much tax can I save with 80C?
At the 30% slab plus 4% cess, a full ₹1.5 lakh deduction saves about ₹46,800. At 20% it saves about ₹31,200, and at 5% about ₹7,800. This calculator shows your exact saving based on your slab.
