They answer different questions, and the right starting point depends on what you are trying to find out.
- “Will I get a refund?” — the income tax calculator. It models the whole return, so it is the one to use if you want a bottom line.
- “Why is my paycheck this small?” — the paycheck calculator, which splits gross pay into federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and take-home.
- “How much do I owe on 1099 income?” — the self-employment tax calculator. Freelancers consistently underestimate this because it is a second tax on top of income tax.
- “What do I send the IRS this quarter?” — the quarterly estimated tax calculator, which also checks whether you meet a penalty safe harbour.
- “What will selling this cost me?” — the capital gains calculator, which handles the one-year holding period and the 3.8% investment surtax.
- “Am I a resident or a non-resident?” — the substantial presence test calculator. Answer this before any of the others if you are on a visa, because it decides whether you file Form 1040 or 1040-NR and which deductions exist for you at all.
Just after the raw figures? The 2026 tax brackets page lists every rate, the standard deduction and the capital gains breakpoints for all four filing statuses.
Where the numbers come from
Every rate, bracket and threshold here is taken from the IRS inflation adjustments for tax year 2026 and Revenue Procedure 2025-32, and each calculator cites its sources at the bottom of the page. The seven federal rates were made permanent by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, so what changes each year is the dollar thresholds.
Each calculator also shows its working rather than just a total — the bracket-by-bracket split, the deduction applied, the taxable income it landed on. A number you cannot check is not much use, and seeing the breakdown is usually what makes the result make sense.
These are federal estimates. None of them include state or local income tax, and they do not model AMT, the qualified business income deduction, or the newer deductions for tips, overtime and seniors. If those apply to you, treat the result as a floor and get the return reviewed.
